“Ever since I was a kid, I have had an interest in the drums. I always seemed to be tapping on things and keeping a beat. I sought out a teacher who could show me the right way to play so I wouldn’t start with any bad habits that would have to be broken in the future. Jim’s website was a deciding factor in choosing an instructor, because of his videos, articles, and testimonials.

Jim and I work on lots of grooves, exercises, play alongs, counting, music theory, and multiple songs (that I can play all the way through). Being able to play along to any song has been great, and learning how to count and keep time has made a huge difference.

I really like that Jim is patient, and he uses analogies to put things in to layman’s terms, which is fantastic!”

“Our daughter Emma wanted a drum set, and we said if we bought her drums, she had to take lessons instead of just banging on them. Jim and Emma have worked together for a while now on lots of beginner tools and grooves, and now she can actually play. She has even played the drums in her school talent show! He’s very focused on the student and uses her lesson time wisely.

I highly recommend Jim as an instructor. We have been very impressed with his teaching style, and he works wonderfully with our daughter. I have told many people about what an amazing teacher he is, and if their child takes drum lessons, they have to take from him!”

“What attracted me to the drums was that my brother was playing percussion and told me to try it. I knew I wanted to become a better drummer, so I decided to look for lessons. When we bought my drums, they came with a free lesson, which is how I met Jim.

We started working on styles like rock and funk, but then I joined jazz band, so we switched to jazz and different world rhythms like the bossa nova and mambo. The biggest result I’ve gotten is getting much better at jazz music. I would never be where I am today if it wasn’t for Jim.

I really like how he has a great attitude about everything! The way Jim teaches drums works very well for me, and I understand so much more after my lessons.”

“I was at a band camp at Interlochen Center for the Arts to play the saxophone for the New Horizon Band. One the classes offered at the camp was drums for non-percussionist, so I signed up for the class and it was so much fun that when I got home I called and made an appointment for drum lessons. After taking lessons for a while, James replaced my instructor at the time when he moved away.

Some of the things James and I work on are the correct way to hit the drums and cymbals, timing and counting rhythms, and playing in different styles of music. One of the biggest results I’ve gotten from my lessons with Jim is the ability to keep the beat and count  when I’m listening to or playing a piece of music. I personally enjoy when I learn a new rhythm or groove, because it’s a great accomplishment for me, and that’s what keeps me coming back!”

“I always wanted to play drums as a kid, but I never got around to it. So when my daughter started to take piano lessons, I figured I’d take drums too. Jim was recommended to me, and after learning different grooves on drum set I want to play even more now! It’s a great feeling when I listen to a song and I can actually hear what the drummer is doing. I really like all of the positive feedback Jim gives during the lesson, and his openness to answer all of my questions!”
